Bubbling Mud and Sulfur Steam

Rotorua is the center of geothermal activity on the north island of New Zealand. We did not go there even though tours were offered because we have been there before.  Instead we took a drive around the city of Tauranga, the port nearest to Rotorua.  Unlike the south island, this is relatively flat and is developed as farmland and sprawling suburb, complete with several KFCs and McDonalds.  There was a stop at an "historic village" which consisted of about 40 buildings, many of them connected along 3 streets.

A few of them were craft and souvenir shops; many of them served as offices for various local organizations.  We had 45 minutes there and then returned to the ship.

In case you were wondering, and even if you were not, we are currently 18 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time or 19 hours ahead of Central Standard Time.  If you are getting up at 7:00, we have already been in bed and well into the next day or some such thing!
