Napier -- No-Go

For the second time on this cruise we have not been able to get into a port.  In the Cook Islands, we were scheduled to anchor in the harbor and go ashore on tenders.  We watched the tender bob up and down and get covered by huge waves and applauded the Captain for his decision that it was too dangerous to use the tenders, so we would sail on to the next port.

As we approached Napier, the channel was narrow and the winds were over 70 mph.  We were to dock here, but the Captain decided it would be too dangerous to try to bring the ship up along the pier. He also said if he could get the ship into the pier he might not get it back out again later in the day as the winds were to get even stronger.  Several cargo ships were waiting at sea for the winds to calm down before attempting to dock.

When he announced that the day's excursions were canceled, Heather, the Cruise Director, came on to relate "Plan Sea."  We had an additional enrichment lecture, and other activities of sea days were added to the schedule.  It gave me a chance to do laundry.  We send most things out to the ship laundry, but I like to do anything that needs to hang dry or anything I want back the same day.
