Flowers and Funiculars, Valparaiso, Chile

Valparaiso is a city clinging to the hills and valleys of the Chilean Coast.  Once upon a time everything that came into the port had to be loaded onto horses, mules or donkeys or carried by people to reach the upper parts of the city.  Before roads were added, over 300 funiculars helped bring people and freight up the hills.  Now only  6 remain, and some of them do not look long for this world.

Now everything comes in containers, and roads take the place of the funiculars.

Our ship, the Viking Sun, is right at home among the containers either coming or going on huge container ships.

Sometimes you wonder how cars can drive up such steep hills, and sometimes you wonder how they get where they are.

Many of the Victorian buildings have been restored but the downtown is strictly modern.

This one is a more modern place - the casino.

This flower clock was a gift from Switzerland.  They change the flowers every three months.  Flowers are everywhere.
